Imagine If: The Future of AI Transparency

Your favorite podcast, RallyCast, is back with a new season featuring prominent guests and in-depth discussions on AI and intellectual property. We kick off Season 2 with a topic central to everything we do – AI transparency. Join Josh Wert from Einride, Sakari Arvela, and host John Paul Keeler as they dive into the ethical aspects of AI.

How can transparent systems enhance user trust, optimize operations, and even prevent harm in real-world applications? We kick off the second season of RallyCast with a topic that’s at the heart of everything we do – AI transparency, which has been crucial for us in building trust since IPRally was founded in 2018.

In this episode, host John Paul Keeler is joined by two expert guests: Josh Wert from Einride and Sakari Arvela from IPRally. Together, they explore the transformative impact of AI across diverse industries – from autonomous driving to intellectual property. The trio discusses the critical role of transparency in AI, the evolving regulatory frameworks, and the ethical considerations and perceptions that can vary not only between industries but also across different cultures.

In the autonomous vehicle industry, where decisions can be a matter of life and death, a critical factor is implementing technology initially in controlled, predictable environments and ensuring that only fully transparent models are used.

“When you look at smaller autonomous vehicle projects, you can build a really convincing proof of concept and an autonomous drive stack that works a lot of the time. But when you want to scale that up, so that it can be in every car, in every Tesla, in every BMW, at that point you can't have something in that vehicle that you don't understand – it becomes really dangerous at scale. If we really want this technology to take off, we have to understand everything that's happening in the situation, every decision”

In this RallyCast:

  • Transparency in practice: What are the black box challenges of AI decision-making transparency in autonomous vehicles vs in patent research?

  • Transparency’s role in trust and accountability: Trust is essential for AI adoption and relies heavily on the users' ability to verify AI decisions. How can AI transparency allow for accountability, giving users confidence in an AI's consistency and reliability?

  • Regulation and ethics in AI development: In domains like autonomous vehicle systems, strong ethical frameworks and regulations are vital. But are we hindering innovation through over-regulation in other sectors, especially in the EU? Finding the right balance between ensuring safety and fostering innovation is crucial as we continue to develop AI technologies.

  • Building trust through open data and transparency. Sakari explains that IPRally builds trust through transparency by securing external models in a controlled AI environment. Josh shares how Einride tests autonomous systems on specific routes to gradually build confidence, a method similar to IPRally’s approach to patent searching.

  • The future of AI in the industry: risks and opportunities. Both Josh and Sakari point out the risks of biased data and the misuse of "black box" technologies. However, they see great potential for AI in areas like patent searching and autonomous freight delivery, provided transparency and regulatory frameworks evolve to ensure responsible use.
